The Mosel and Rhine Rivers are dotted with charming towns and medieval castles, and connected with bicycle paths and bike-friendly roads, just waiting for you to explore. Until the eighteenth century, rivers were the main routes of travel and the castles, or “Burgs”, were tariff collection points by sometimes unscrupulous landowners. Their spectacular mansions line the banks of these rivers, in a display of the best achievements of German gothic architecture. The region is also known for its Roman history and a wine industry that dates to the Roman times. Each town on the route has its own special brand of Mosel or Rhine wine. This route is an ideal one for all levels of cycling experience. Mostly level on dedicated bike trails, it covers 154 miles in nine days of riding.
